20 Feb Your guide to a wonderful winter in Paris
For many people, winter is not the most appealing time of the year. It’s cold, it’s rainy, and if you’re not living in a country that really knows how to do winter (we know, Canada…), it can be inconvenient to do things outside your home.
But rest easy. Whether you’ve just arrived in Paris or would still like a few pointers as to what to do in the French capital, we got you covered.
Cinema:
Compared to most countries (UK, USA especially), going to see a film in France is not that expensive. A regular ticket is around €10-11, and you can get deals pretty easily. A lot of cinemas will offer 5 entry cards that come with an interesting discount. And if you actually love the cinema experience, the biggest cinema franchises (UGC and Pathé Gaumont) offer unlimited passes for a really good price (around €20-25 a month). Just look at the cinemas in your neighbourhood and select the more convenient ones.
Most Parisians cinemas will offer original version movies with French subtitles, which is great to practice your French all the while enjoying your movie.
Plus, the seats are comfy and very warm, so…
The great greenhouses at the Jardin des plantes:
Let’s skip to Spring for a second. The Jardin des Plantes is a gorgeous park at the heart of Paris and you can stroll down the alleys and visit all the attractions for free (alpine garden, eco-friendly garden, maze…). Lovely as a couple, great for kids.
But in the dead of winter… I understand why a walk in the park isn’t so attractive. However, the Jardin des Plantes is home to the French national museum of natural history, which has five great greenhouses, four of which can be visited by the public. For a regular fee of €7*, you can remove your scarves and jackets and enjoy the tropical heat inside.
*if you pay full price, you get a discount for a second visit within three months.
Hot chocolate. Need I say more?
You can hardly take three steps in Paris without running across a bistrot, brasserie ou little café. While some are very touristy and do not offer a very authentic, warm experience, you should definitely walk in one of these to sit down and warm up with a nice cup of hot chocolate, café crème or “grog” (rum, hot water, lemon slices and honey), if you’re interested in something a little bit stronger. There, you can sip on your drink, nibble on a nice patisserie perhaps, and look at the life of a café unfold before your eyes.
Stay tuned for a selection of the best cafés in Paris!
Paris is full of treasures to enjoy, both in summer and winter times. Let the heart of the city warm you up, even when the temperatures are not so attractive!
